The ultimate guide to preparing for your professional headshots

Preparing for a professional headshot photoshoot can be intimidating, especially if you need to get used to being in front of the camera. I love being behind the camera, for example, but being in front feels.. vulnerable.

With some prep, however, you can ensure that your headshot photo session goes smoothly and puts your best visual foot forward.

Here are a few tips for preparing for a professional headshot photoshoot:

Don’t wait until the last minute to consider your wardrobe: Your wardrobe will be on full display for your professional headshots, so make sure you put some thought into picking out the pieces, colors, and styles.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want a suit in my professional photos? Or more of a business casual look?

  • Or do I just want a nice, clean, casual look?

  • Do I want a little of both?

I recommend customers do a little of both.

A nice jacket often makes this an easy transition from formal to casual.

Regardless of what you choose, you also want to ensure your clothes don’t have any distracting wrinkles.

Lastly, you can consider shoes and accessories once you have your core elements.

Consider your grooming/haircut preferences: Headshots are not like the annual Christmas card; we only really take them when we need them. I have had customers schedule hair appointments before a shoot or even get their hair styled right before them. You don’t need to hire a hair stylist or book an appointment, but it’s important to flag if styling makes you feel your best.

PS- nails don’t always make an explicit appearance in headshots, but you certainly don’t want to have chipped or discolored nails.

Practice your expressions: If only for a few minutes. This can help you get into the mindset of getting in front of a camera. Also, one thing to remember is that we are our worst critics, so even if you think you have an angle, it’s always great to be open to different poses and expressions as they come.
Rest up & prep your outfit the night before: Make sure you budget for your beauty sleep, and in case those nerves sneak in on you, prep your outfit and any items you plan on taking the night before. It makes the day-of prep easier when everything’s already in one place.

Share your ideas with your photographer: As you count down the days of your photoshoot, don’t be afraid to share your ideas or photos you love with your photographer. This will give them a better idea of what you’re looking for and how to ensure you’re a happy customer. Plus, I love headshots that tell a story and showcase your personality or give some context on who you are; giving your photographer those insights is priceless. Again, headshots aren’t something you often schedule, so you should be empowered to make the most of your session.

I hope these tips help prepare you for your next headshot session. If you have any specific questions or are interested in learning more about how you can book your next headshot photoshoot, visit my contact page.
